What is Learning for Life?

add remove

Our Learning for Life program provides emotional, practical and financial support to help disadvantaged children and young people with their education. Our support starts in the early years of learning development and continues through primary and high school. Our programs help build skills, knowledge, motivation, self-belief and a network of positive relationships with parents, peers and significant others. This support increases a young person’s likelihood of remaining engaged with school, completing Year 12 and developing realistic and informed study and career pathways for life beyond the school gate.

How does the Toy & Book Appeal work?

add remove

Your generous contribution allows us to target those most in need and purchase age appropriate toys and books to brighten Christmas for a child that would have otherwise gone without. This year we need to support 25,000 children and can only do that with your help. By making a purchase through our online Charity Gift Catalogue; for you it saves worrying about shopping centres and queues, but for us it means fewer costs for storage, transport and delivery and ability to target the needs of our kids.

What is a Toy and Book Pack?

add remove

A Toy and Book Pack is made up of two toys (one big and one small) and two books. We always aim for educational toys and books. It is the gift we give our Learning for Life students and their families at Christmas time. Christmas time is a stressful time, particularly financially, so we hope this eases the burden for these families.

Why can’t I choose what toy or book to donate?

At The Smith Family our main focus is ensuring that children have the best opportunities in life and are afforded the same rights and expectations as others. Our Learning for Life staff get to know our students and families really well and we want to ensure that the gifts we give are appropriate for the kids receiving them.

But I give great gifts! Why can’t I choose?

As Australia’s leading education charity we have relationships with a number of different organisations, including toy companies. You could buy one Barbie doll off the shelf. However, if you donated the retail cost of that Barbie doll, we could actually buy two! We can get discounted charity purchasing rates and this actually allows your money to go further. We are so grateful for your support of our families and we want to ensure your dollar goes as far as it can.

You can be assured that your money will go to where it is intended. We promise. We’re all about the kids!
